In the midst of both rural and urban settings, many children face the harsh realities of street life, presented with challenges that threaten their well-being and access to education. The role of non-governmental organizations (NGOs) and other entities in this aspect then becomes an important figure to allow and encourage members of the society to take part in helping street children as part of their advocacy.
From outreach programs and basic needs support to education initiatives, vocational training, and other services, addressing street children’s immediate needs and fostering long-term solutions pave the way for a brighter future for those who, against the odds, strive for a life beyond the margins of society.
Now, how can more people help in this initiative? Childhope Philippines is one of the key contributors of such programs and projects designed to encourage both individual and organizational volunteers to participate in them. These include empowering street children through education, healthcare, and child protection programs.
Transparency in charitable efforts is of paramount importance for building trust and fostering a positive impact on communities. When donors and supporters are informed about how their contributions are utilized, it creates a sense of accountability and credibility. This also demonstrates a commitment to the cause and assures stakeholders that their resources are being used effectively. This transparency not only strengthens the relationship between charities and their supporters but also encourages greater collaboration and engagement.
Childhope Receives CAF America Verification
At the very heart of the organization’s efforts, Childhope Philippines stays committed to being transparent in everything they do. Through their initiatives and the help of donors and volunteers, Childhope was recently recognized and officially verified by Charities Aid Foundation (CAF) America, a global grantmaking organization with a focus on facilitating and streamlining the grantmaking process for donors, particularly those interested in supporting international causes.
The prestigious CAF America verification solidifies Childhope’s dedication to ethical practices, effective programs, and impactful use of donor funds.
Mylene Lagman, Childhope’s Resource Mobilization and Communications Manager, had this to say:
“We are thrilled to have earned CAF America’s esteemed verification. This rigorous review process validates our unwavering dedication to transparency, accountability, and maximizing the impact of every donation.”
What is Childhope’s Street Education and Protection Program (STEP)?
Even without a classroom setting, NGOs like Childhope Philippines think of and implement various ways to improve the lives of street children. Through our advocacy on education, the following programs and projects are made possible under our Street Education and Protection Program:
Education
Childhope’s KalyEskwela (“school on the streets”) initiative employs a mobile van equipped with audiovisual tools to deliver alternative education sessions and foundational literacy and numeracy classes. Operating under the umbrella of the DepEd-accredited Alternative Learning System (ALS), street children and youth engage in learning through modules facilitated by our street educators, who are trained as instructional managers.
In addition to alternative education, we offer educational support to children reintegrating into the formal school system. Furthermore, for older participants, we administer trade and technical skills training through the Youth Empowerment Project. This initiative aims to equip them with practical skills, fostering self-sufficiency and enabling them to contribute to the well-being of both themselves and their families.
Other Services and Projects
- Psychosocial Interventions: In this aspect, Childhope offers emotional support and counseling. We assist children and their parents in managing stress and overcoming challenges they face in their learning journey. Additionally, we provide help to shelters, especially those caring for completely neglected and abandoned children.
- Health and Medical Services: The Mobile Health Clinic, also known as KliniKalye, offers essential medical care, check-ups, and treatments to prevent health issues. This ensures that the children are in good health and physically ready for learning.
- Skills Development: We provide training for street children in leadership, computer literacy, sports, arts, and various other skills. Our aim is to help them develop these abilities, encourage their positive qualities, and apply the values they learn in planning their lives.
In relation to Childhope’s recent CAF America verification, donors have a clearer purpose and reason of working with our programs through the following considerations:
- Peace of Mind: With Childhope receiving a CAF America verification, this assures your contributions are utilized responsibly and charitably, mitigating risks of fraud or misuse.
- Confident Giving: With verified ethical practices and efficient programs, you can contribute with the assurance that your generosity is truly transforming lives.
- Wider Reach: CAF America’s network unlocks additional funding opportunities, allowing Childhope to expand its reach and support even more vulnerable children.
It’s also undeniable that this milestone couldn’t have been achieved without the tireless efforts of the Childhope Philippines team, the unwavering trust of supporters, and the boundless generosity of donors.
How to Help Street Children in Their Education and Well-Being?
It’s crucial to involve the community and collaborate with existing organizations to ensure a sustainable and effective impact on the lives of street children. This way, initiatives can be more comprehensive, intentional, and targeted to their needs.
There are various efforts donors and volunteers can consider taking part in, including the following:
- Outreach Programs – You can also conduct regular street visits to identify and connect with children in need. For these, collaborate with local NGOs, community groups, or government agencies that specialize in outreach programs for street children.
- Education Programs – NGOs, volunteer initiatives, and outreach communities establish non-formal education centers or collaborate with existing ones to provide basic education. They can also offer flexible schedules to accommodate the unique challenges faced by street children and provide educational materials, uniforms, and other necessities.
- Basic Needs Support – Malnutrition and illness are common challenges for street children. Hence, programs providing access to food, clean water, and basic healthcare can also be great initiatives.
- Vocational Training – Organizations can also work with local businesses to create or provide job opportunities for trained individuals. Through vocational training programs, they can work with volunteers and donors to equip older street children with practical skills for future employment.
- Counseling and Mental Health Support – Professionals or trained volunteers can help provide counseling services to address trauma, anxiety, and other mental health issues. These usually affect the psychological wellbeing of street children.
- Volunteer and Donation Drives – Recruit volunteers to help with education, counseling, and other support services. Also, organizing donation drives for clothing, books, and other essential items is a practical way to provide support to street children.
