Paco, Manila – With ACC21’s Street Children ZERO campaign, an opportunity for our street youth was given to 16 individuals that allowed them to be part of Project Bamboo’s Street Youth Empowerment program. These children were provided six months of training with alternative training sessions led by project officer Mr. Melchor Amante, along with assistant project officer Ms. Efzel Teodosio.
Sponsored by ACC21 (Asian Community Center 21), Project Bamboo extends training opportunities to youth in street situations. The program encompasses modules on self-awareness, values, entrepreneurship, livelihood, and financial literacy. These sessions engaged the children in knowing more about themselves and preparing them for the future of employment.
In addition, Project Bamboo also gave them an employability session as part of the program to empower these individuals in terms of having their own careers. This part of the session enabled them to draft their own resumes, conduct practice interviews, and take key points for an interview, which allowed them to progress during these practices.

The Impact of ACC21 and Project Bamboo
The recent graduation ceremony was held last Saturday, May 4, 2024, at the Asian Social Institute (ASI) in Paco, Manila. The event marked the culmination of vocational and employment training for 16 youths from street situations. This collaborative effort aims to furnish graduates with practical skills tailored to their chosen fields, thereby facilitating further education and career advancement, ultimately instilling hope among street youth. These graduates now have the practical knowledge and ability to hit the ground running in their chosen field. Moreover, with the given program and training, these open up opportunities for further education or career development, making it a significant milestone in a student’s career journey and allowing them in the future to be a symbol of hope for our street youth.
Introduction to ACC21’s Street Children ZERO Campaign
The Asian Community Center 21 (ACC21) has made significant strides in addressing the plight of street children through its Street Children ZERO Campaign. This initiative aims to eradicate the number of children living on the streets by providing them with education, healthcare, and the necessary resources to lead a dignified life. The campaign’s goal is to ensure that no child is left behind and that every child has the opportunity to grow up in a safe and nurturing environment.
One of the key components of ACC21’s campaign is its focus on raising awareness and mobilizing resources. ACC21 highlights the challenges faced by street children, particularly in countries like the Philippines. These efforts not only draw attention to the urgent need for action but also encourage global participation in finding solutions. The Street Children ZERO Campaign underscores the importance of international collaboration in tackling this complex issue, emphasizing that collective efforts can lead to significant change.
Overview of Project Bamboo’s Street Youth Empowerment Program
Another exemplary initiative making a difference in the lives of street youth is Project Bamboo, a collaboration between Childhope Philippines and ACC21. This program is specifically designed to empower street children by providing them with the education and skills needed to build a better future.
Project Bamboo focuses on livelihood and skills training, offering courses in areas such as handicrafts, cooking, and other vocational skills that can lead to sustainable employment. By equipping street youth with practical skills, the program not only helps them secure immediate job opportunities but also fosters a sense of independence and self-reliance. The program’s success is evident in the number of street children who have transitioned from a life of uncertainty to becoming skilled workers contributing positively to their communities.
Most importantly, education is at the heart of Project Bamboo, with initiatives that aim to reintegrate street children into the formal education system whenever possible. For those who cannot attend regular school, the program provides alternative learning opportunities that are tailored to their unique circumstances.

How Do Street Youth Empowerment Programs Help Street Children?
Street youth empowerment programs play a crucial role in helping street children by providing them with the tools, resources, and opportunities needed to improve their lives and break free from the cycle of poverty and homelessness. These programs focus on various aspects of development, including education, skills training, mental health support, and community integration. In turn, they underscore the importance of investing in the future of these vulnerable youth.
Education and Skills Training
One of the primary benefits of street youth empowerment programs is the provision of education and skills training. Education is a powerful tool that enables street children to gain knowledge and develop skills that can lead to better job opportunities in the future. On the other hand, skills training programs teach practical abilities such as vocational skills, financial literacy, and entrepreneurship, empowering youth to become self-sufficient.
Mental Health
Mental health support is another critical component of these programs. Street children often experience trauma and emotional distress due to their challenging circumstances. Empowerment programs provide counseling and support services to help these children cope with their experiences, build resilience, and develop a positive outlook on life.
Community Integration
A youth empowerment program also emphasizes community integration by fostering a sense of belonging and social inclusion. Street children are often marginalized and excluded from mainstream society, which can lead to feelings of isolation and hopelessness. Having them take part in community activities encourages them to build relationships, enabling them to build supportive networks.
Childhope Philippines: A Beacon of Hope for the Future
Childhope Philippines stands as a beacon of hope for street children, offering a comprehensive range of programs and projects designed to empower and uplift them. Through our targeted initiatives, not only do we address the immediate needs of street children; we also equip them with the skills and resources necessary for long-term success.
One of our cornerstone programs is the KalyEskwela Program. This initiative brings education directly to the streets, where volunteer educators teach basic literacy, numeracy, and values formation. In addition to education, we also provide health and medical services through our KliniKalye Mobile Health Clinic, ensuring that street children receive essential healthcare. The program addresses the physical well-being of these vulnerable children, which is crucial for their overall development and ability to participate in other empowerment initiatives.
Skills training and livelihood programs are another vital aspect of our work. These programs — ranging from computer literacy and arts and crafts to vocational skills — focus on teaching practical skills that can lead to sustainable employment opportunities. Finally, Childhope’s psychosocial interventions provide critical mental health support, helping street children heal from the trauma of their experiences.
All these youth empowerment programs are designed to help children build a more positive and hopeful outlook on life.
