When people choose to volunteer, they don’t just share their time—they offer hope, compassion, and direction to those who need it most. For the volunteers and interns of Childhope Philippines, their service is more than a requirement or extracurricular activity. On the contrary, it’s a life-changing experience that fosters purpose, empathy, and a deeper understanding of the struggles street children face every day.
As part of Childhope’s growing network of advocates, volunteers from different walks of life have come forward to share their journey through what the nongovernment organization calls the “KalyExperience”: a personal and emotional window into the world of street education, mobile learning, and youth empowerment.
Their stories of volunteer experience highlight the profound impact of meaningful volunteer work, both on the lives of the children they serve and on their own.

What Does Volunteering Mean to Street Children?
For children in street situations, life is often a day-to-day battle for survival. Many lack access to safe shelter, consistent education, nutritious meals, or even the simple assurance that someone cares. While systemic changes take time, the presence of dedicated volunteers offers immediate, tangible relief. More importantly, they provide an emotional connection to these underprivileged kids.
Volunteers become mentors, friends, advocates, and role models. Through mobile learning sessions, outreach events, and mentorship, they help children build literacy and life skills, develop self-esteem, and feel seen in a world that often ignores them.
Organizations like Childhope Philippines have long recognized that while programs and resources are essential, human connection remains the thing that leaves a lasting mark. For the children, volunteers represent hope—a reminder that they matter.
Personal Reflections of Childhope Staff on Their Volunteer Experience
Each volunteer and intern who walks alongside Childhope carries with them a unique story. Their volunteer experience as a whole is shaped by encounters, challenges, and moments of purpose. Below are heartfelt reflections from some of the individuals who have embraced the “KalyExperience” and, in the process, found deeper meaning in serving children in street situations.
July, Intern
For July, her KalyExperience isn’t merely about internship, but a calling rooted in heart and hope. She says that her volunteer experience opened her eyes to the stories behind every street child, and how each of us have the privilege to give hope and direction to those children’s lives.
“Umaasa akong magpatuloy ng pagsuporta sa marami pang pagkakataon, upang mas marami pang batang naninirahan sa lansangan ang mabahaginan ng kaalaman na makakatulong sa kanilang kakayahan tungo sa pagtupad ng kanilang pangarap.”
[“I hope to continue supporting more opportunities so that more street children can be given knowledge that will help them build the skills they need to pursue their dreams.”]
Marco, Intern
Just like July, Marco concurs that the volunteer experience isn’t just an on-the-job training; instead, it’s an avenue to bring hope. He recounts that his KalyExperience taught him that behind every street child’s eye, there’s a story waiting to be heard and an ambition that needs supporting. To succeed, Marco continues, one needs an open heart and genuine care to give hope—something that doesn’t require one to be a superhero.
“Natutunan ko sa Childhope ang makisalamuha sa iba’t ibang tao, anuman ang kanilang estado sa buhay—lalo na kung paano tumulong at tumugon sa mga batang nasa lansangan.”
[“At Childhope, I learned how to connect with people from all walks of life—especially how to support and respond to the needs of children in street situations.”]
Ryu, Volunteer
Meanwhile, having a mother who has been working with Childhope for more than 15 years, Ryu has been exposed to the world of helping those in need since she was just over two years old.
Her KalyExperience goes beyond distributing donations, sharing what she knows, taking photos during outreaches, and being present in moments that deeply move and inspire. On the contrary, Ryu maintains it’s also about the inner lessons she acquires from each experience; namely lessons of compassion, humility, and the power of small acts of kindness.
“I’ve come to realize that each of us holds the potential to create change in the lives of these children. For every donation received, a burden is lifted. For every wisdom taught, a light is sparked. For every smile captured through a camera lens, a soul is warmed. And for every child, there is always space for another heart willing to help.”
Chrissy, Former Scholar / Volunteer
As a former Childhope scholar and now a passionate volunteer, Chrissy views her volunteer experience as the opportunity to “give back with a heart.” She shares how organizing activities with Childhope brings her joy and fulfillment, with her story reminding us that helping others is a gift we give ourselves.
“It makes me happy when we organize activities with Childhope Philippines. Volunteering gives me a sense of fulfillment and it’s something I’m always eager to be part of. I genuinely enjoy giving back to the community.”
Jaina, Volunteer
Finally, Jaina’s journey with Childhope shows how volunteering creates a ripple of kindness. Through her efforts, she has found a meaningful way to give back to the community.
“Being part of Childhope volunteering has allowed me to give back to the community.”
The Role of Volunteers in Childhope’s Programs
Volunteers are vital to the success of Childhope’s core programs. Whether working behind the scenes or directly engaging with children, they help expand the organization’s reach and deepen its impact. Volunteers help power the impact of its core programs by contributing to:
- KalyEskwela: Volunteers assist in delivering alternative education sessions, tutoring street children, and helping facilitate literacy and numeracy skills.
- Health and Medical Services: Health professionals and trained volunteers conduct medical missions, promote health and hygiene practices, and support nutrition-focused activities.
- Psychosocial Interventions for Children in Street Situations: Volunteers with a background in psychology or social work help implement individual and group counseling, play therapy, and other psychosocial support services.
- Youth Empowerment Project: Childhope also provides support for older participants in the form of trade and tech skills training. Here, volunteers help facilitate vocational training sessions or assist with livelihood programs that equip youth and families with income-generating skills.
- Skills Development: Volunteers allot their time and efforts training street children in leadership, computer literacy, sports, arts, and other skills. These, in turn, aim to help children develop their skills, nurture their good traits, and apply the values they have learned in life planning.
These roles show that volunteering isn’t limited to one kind of service. Whether you’re passionate about teaching, storytelling, logistics, or advocacy, there’s a place awaiting you in Childhope’s volunteer program.
Lend Your Heart and Hands to Our Mission, Too
